Will computers replace teachers?

A preoccupation for some teachers is that computers will replace teachers.
Yet there are good grounds for rejecting this position.

Which of these statements do you agree with the most?
Students can work on their own, without needing a teacher.
The Internet has unlimited information, resources and language practice material.
Computer users can make contact with anyone they want.
It's more fun on a computer.
There are still vast numbers of people in this world who don't have access to computers or the Internet.
Some students are better at working on their own than others.
Most people enjoy the face-to-face contact that language learning (and language use) often presupposes.
Internet material is not yet sufficiently interactive or 'human' enough to replace good teachers completely – or even partially.
None of the above.

Perhaps, instead, we should not think about the Internet as an alternative to classroom teaching, but rather as a welcome addition to the various aids and materials we had at our command before it came along. This view says that we should use the many riches of computers and the Internet alongside our teaching, and in this way help our students to make use of its many benefits and attractions.

The question we need to address therefore, is how to use computers and the Internet most appropriately.

Back to Do computers and the Internet have anything to offer.
